Deakin University required a compliant emergency access upgrade to support fire appliance loading and operational standing in a live campus environment. Quantum Civil was engaged to deliver the civil and structural works, bringing together heavy-duty pavement design, retaining wall construction, and precise interface coordination.

The technical challenge was coordinating structural elements—retaining walls, reinforced pavement slabs, and building interfaces while maintaining tight tolerances across multiple tie-in points. Emergency access infrastructure has to perform under load when it’s needed most, so reinforcement placement, concrete thickness, and subgrade preparation were all verified through survey controls and structural inspections before progressing to the next stage.

Working within an active university campus added a layer of complexity. Students, staff, and service vehicles needed continuous access, so our team staged the works to keep pedestrian routes open, managed traffic diversions around construction zones, and coordinated deliveries to avoid peak campus movement periods. Completed sections were protected and handed over progressively to minimize footprint and disruption.

The result is a durable, load-rated emergency standing area that improves campus safety, meets fire service compliance requirements, and supports long-term operational readiness without ongoing maintenance burden.
